What Do You Get When You Fall In Love?
A Valentine’s Day Tribute to Burt Bacharach and Tony Soprano
by Fabienne Marsh

In February of 2019, the El Paso Zoo launched an event that sated both hungry meerkats and jilted humans.

It was an instant hit.

Heart with cockroaches on it. Name a cockroach after your Ex! Names will be displayed on our meerkat exhibit and on our social media starting Feb. 11th! Watch live Feb 14th at 2:15pm on Facebook or our meerkat webcam to see our meerkat mob crunch down on these little bugs!

Despite the zoo’s instructions to protect the privacy of all parties by naming the cockroach with only the first name and first letter of the heartbreaker’s last name, people went crazy.  More than 6,800 comments from the US and across the world  infested the site with full names, cringe-worthy accounts of relationships, and high praise for the person who came up with the Valentine’s Day event.

Here are a few (full names deleted):

“This is some messed up shit I think I’ll send a name.” “OMG!! This is the best Valentine's Day gift I could ask for! I feel so bad for the Meerkat though, as it's possibly the worst meal to ever have to digest. That being said, could you please add my ex?” “Happy Valentine’s Day !!! Please chew slowly and enjoy, Jose F. Y. III !!! ” “Am I the only one wanting to plan a watch party?” “Oh this is the best idea ever!!!! I have my ex fiance who asked me to marry him on Valentine's day then broke up with me over the phone 6 months later cause he was a cheater- Bill H. And my ex husband who hasn't talked to his only child for over a year…” “Can we name one after a politician???” “His name is John J. O'B of Montana...hope the meerkat doesn't choke on his la cucaracha.... ” “How about my mother-in-law. Her name is Kimberly M. B.” “Whoever came Up with this: you're a genius!” “You could charge for this and live stream the feedings on Facebook, set it up as a501c3 donation and I bet you could make a lot! ” “Marion. Greetings from Germany and Happy Valentine's Day.” “Kevin smelled amazing but was flaky and tasteless. The presentation was compelling, but there wasn’t much going on inside. 1/10. Would not eat again.” (Meerkat review) “You have NO idea how much I love this activity. Bon appetit, Timon!”

Meerkat on a post for Meerkat Manor. Heading says: Tonoy's Out. Flowers in.With Tony Soprano, you get revenge.   Cute, fluffy, Alpha meerkat mothers whack babies in their own species.

With Burt Bacharach, who died six days before this Valentine’s Day, you get some of the most popular love songs ever written, yet even then, here’s what you get when you fall in love – ‘a guy with a pin to burst your bubble’, ‘enough germs to catch pneumonia’, ‘chains that bind you’ followed by ‘pain and sorrow’ (lyrics by Hal David, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again).

Thanks to the El Paso Zoo,  vengeful or heartbroken valentines have a delicious alternative to Valentine’s day – one far less tragic, but perhaps equally cathartic to classic Greek spectacles.

Dionne Warwick will take our readers out with the 1969 hit, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.”

#RIPBurtBacharach and Happy Valentine’s Day!
